Workshop Requirements

Beginner’s Workshop

Wi-fi is not guaranteed. We highly encourage you to run a local web server from your laptop, and to test it out and install WordPress beforehand. We will not be able to devote session time to getting these setup, as each person could have a different setup to manage.

Below are some tutorials on setting up WAMP or MAMP to run a local server, but you may use the software that suits you best.

Windows: http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-install-wordpress-on-your-windows-computer-using-wamp/

Mac: http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-install-wordpress-locally-on-mac-using-mamp/

For remote WordPress installation, install FileZilla: https://filezilla-project.org/

Developer’s Workshop

If you cannot get a basic web server setup before the workshop, it may not be for you.

You should also have a good text editor installed that can provide syntax highlighting, such as one of the following:

Programmer’s Notepad for Windows: http://www.pnotepad.org/

Brackets for Mac: http://brackets.io/

If you want to follow along exactly with the presentation, David will be using VirtualBox and Vagrant, with a VVV install. He will be editing code using Sublime Text 3 and some useful add-ons for it.

  1. Hi. I’m a newbie, and I’m not sure what this means. Does it mean there won’t be internet at the conference location?

    1. Hi Sandy, we’ll have people in the Happiness Bar on Saturday that can help you with setting things up for the workshops. We warn that there is unreliable internet because Rosen’s wi-fi is spotty and has a 20-minute use policy for guests, making you log in after every session. So we ask that everyone take as much precaution to have the files they’ll need on their laptops ahead of time. Fingers crossed it’ll be a good wi-fi day!

      1. thanks. I see “If you cannot get a basic web server setup before the workshop, it may not be for you.” and really re-evaluating whether or not this is for me. will make a decision today.

    1. The original conference was scheduled for three days, and references in October were for a three-day event. If we missed a reference to length somewhere when updating the rescheduled event, it is only two days.

  2. Any way you can let me know if the Wi-Fi did indeed work today, Saturday? I was only attending on Sunday to the beginner WordPress. If there is no Wi-Fi, it will be useless to me. I Have a five-year-old laptop I am not technical at all LOL. Thanks

    1. There is wifi at the college, but it should never be absolutely relied upon since we can’t make any guarantee about a specific computer being able to connect to it.

We have the ability to run a local (hosted on your own computer) version of WordPress if needed, meaning you can follow along with the lessons without internet access if necessary.
